Movies, How Much and What We Put In

Mike,
Any way you could get a blog going of what movies and the quantity of each title owners are putting in. I would certain post my weekly strategies. This would help everyone new and old to this venture. We could enter in something like what's below.

3 Pineapple Express (selling one on Ebay immediately after the first weekend)
2 Righteous Kill
1 Wackness
1 Babalon AD
Walmart ($105.00)

Regards,
Cedric

2 Pineapple express (college apts)

I am not getting good rentals out of Pineapple express at my grocery store location. Righteous kill, I can not keep it in the machine. My grocery store customers enjoy comedy and action movies the most, but college varity of comedy, aka pineapple express, forgetting sarah marshall, and etc do not do well.

Joe Fusco said...

Forgetting Sarah marshal did great for me, as is Pineapple Express. I'm in a grocery store.

When you sell movies on Amazon or Ebay, do you remove the rfid tag and get all the goo off or leave it on? I take it off and put cover in a clean case. Rfid is a pain to get off, am I wasting my time?

HI everyone I'm new to this blog. I have 2 kiosk and live in California. I am about to get my machines placed and wanted some help. My machine is totally empty and wanted to ask if you all could recommend your best titles, I need to fill my machine with about 60 dvd's and will put about 30 different titles. I know everyone is different, just want to try and put the best titles in so my kiosk will have the best start.

Thanks, Vinnie

P.S.
Mr. Weiland thanks for this blog, I just started to follow it and it is great!

Mike at ReadyDVD said...

Hi Vinnie,
Nice to have you on board. I've always done really well with the action movies and comedy flicks. I don't really ever do well with Drama's or the gross stuff like SAW.. My customers also do a couple of the kids movies but I always have problems with the parents giving the videos to the kids and they get scratched up. I like Action, Thriller and comedy. They always do best for me. Good idea not filling your machine up right away! The best of luck to ya!

Sincerely,
Mike Weiland

Does anyone every monitor the number of movies that are in their kiosk according to their rating? What I mean is does anyone make sure that 30% or 50% of their movies are PG, 20% PG13, and/or 40% are R/UR? (NOTE: these percentages I just pulled out of my head)

Curtis said...

I am curious as to what movies everyone is putting in their kiosks the weeks of Feb 3rd, Feb 24th and March 17th. From what I can see there are no good choices.

Mike at ReadyDVD said...

We were kind of noticing the same thing.

Secret Life of Bees
Madagascar Escape 2 Africa

W.
Nights in Rodanthe

Quarantine
Body of Lies

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

There really isn't much more that's worth it. People just don't rent to rent. They want to rent good stuff. I think February will be cold here too...

Hi Mike,

Love the Blog! I've found about $150 a month in savings through your tips with 2 machines and a 3rd being put in next week. 11 months in business and this is by far the most valuable help that I've found!

I'm also putting in Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist 2/3/09

Twilight comes out Saturday 2/21/09

Thanks for the comments Andrew! I appreciate it. I am very glad to have all of you on board. If we can save money by using each other's ideas, this blog is worth the work for me.

I didn't realize 2 from Universal were out on this date

I will also cancel 1 of the Transporter 3 for a total of 2.

I just started 2 kiosks this month (Feb) THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this blog. It has a ton of great info. I have a kiosk in a pharmacy in a small town and it is just beginning to pick up some. And I am currently working with a location company to place my 2nd machine. I have adjusted my ordering to reflect what I have seen here. Where do you have better luck selling your used inventory? Ebay, Amazon, Other? How do you know where to put your price ffor the used inventory?

Thanks

Mike at ReadyDVD said...

I personally don't sell anything or have to worry about it. All of my locations sell them for me. I believe that Rich Comeux uses Amazon.

Thanks for the comments!

Joe Fusco said...

I use Amazon. They have a high commision but it's easy and Amazon is where people look for movies.

I look at the used price for the movie. Ex. if the low price for a movie is in a range of 6 to 8 dollars I go about 7.50. Anything less than 7 I send back to VPD for 5.50, if that is what you use. Universal movies I sell for what I can get, can't send them to VPD.

Curtis said...

I have one c-store that sells my DVDs for me.
I made a box that sits on their counter next to the register, I pay them $2 a movie and they cut me a check once a month. There is a blockbuster across the street, I check their price and keep mine a buck lower. I also include a coupon with 2 FNF codes. They really like it. I keep it clean and stocked, they take the risk on theft and we both profit.

Thanks Curtis great advice!

Just looked over my April order form. Is it just me or does it look awful thin on choices? Anybody gonna order Doubt or The Wrestler? Not counting Universal titles I only come up with 6 movies I want to order for the whole month. (And I think Despereaux is the only Universal I'll get).

Curtis said...

utchuckd,
I agree, there are very few choices most of them are in the first week, I was not going to purchase "doubt, but there is nothing the rest of the month.
Hopefully VPD will add more.
I was looking at the spirit, but it got very low ratings. I hate to buy movies just put something in the kiosk.

3 weeks without any new choices in our kiosk will really hurt.

Maybe this is why Redbox is adding an
"old favorites" section

Mine looks like yours, but I had Day the Earth Stood Still instead of Doubt on 4/7. I'm probably not gonna order Doubt because there are 3-4 others that week, but I may order The Wrestler because it's the only thing that week.

Also, Bride Wars is out 4/28. I'll be getting that.

Donnie

Joe Fusco said...

A quick comment for now. I will have my April selections later.

I look at it this way. March has a lot of hit movies that should keep people busy for a while. Bolt, 007, Twilight, Slumdog Mill, 7 Pounds. A lot is being spent that month. I see april as a break in spending and should be offset from the money made from the March titles.

I took a long shot and ordered The Cake Eaters. It has the star from Twilight and is only $15.00.

Anonymous said...

Has anybody looked at the flexplay 'no return' dvds? Are they strictly their own company or do they set up dealers? I'm not sure what to think about them. I like the idea but $4-5 may be too steep.

Joe Fusco said...

Hi Donnie

What is flexplay?

I don't like the idea of the "rental" version of the movies that we have to order. I just got Twilight and the UPC don't even come up on amazon. I get rid of most my movies on amazon. These will be impossible to sell. And VPD lowered the buyback to $5.00 and only 60 days old now.

Does anyone use amazon prime and do the movies come in on time. I ordered from walmart.com and they came on the Monday before street date, but are a little higher than amazon.

Mike at ReadyDVD said...

I order movies from Amazon with their Prime membership only for the Universal titles we can’t get from VPD. They have always arrived on time but we do get them just the Monday before they street. (one day early). Please keep in mind that we haven’t used this too much, as 95% of our movies come from VPD.

Michelle Weiland

Flexplay is a 'no-return' dvd. Basically the way they are made after they are opened and exposed to air it starts a chemical reaction which will make the dvd unusable after 2 days. So you pay $5 for it then whenever you want to watch it you open the pack and have 2 days to watch it. It comes shrink wrapped in a cardboard sleeve, so there's not a regular case with it, but it could be stuck in a case and loaded in a machine. I've seen them at a c-store I stop at occasionally. They retail around $5 from what I've seen, which may price them out of our business (depending on what they might cost, if we can even get them).

I'm thinking my VPD buyback is about to be a non-issue anymore. I'm getting my orders dialed in, but it's a less than my original plans (2 copies max of a movie, 2-3 titles a week). So with less movies going in, to keep the machine stocked they won't be rotating out as much so movies are going to stay in the machine longer, therefore reducing much of the buyback program monies. Either that or pull them out anyway and keep the machine halfway stocked.

Joe Fusco said...

Thanks Michelle

I think the amazon prime will work for me. I can't sell the used movies in the store. I rely on amazon to sell used movies and the upc#s for these Fox/MGM rentals versions just wont cut it. I will have to buy the sell through version just so I can sell them used. I think the price should be very cheaper on the rental version through VPD. I think Twilight was .50 cheaper.

Curtis said...

One bright spot for me is for some reason I have had over 50 sales this year from customers keeping them longer than 12 days. and I have only lost 4. Right now I have 2 kiosks with 8-10 empty slots

I am also tring some thing new this week. I ordered 3 copies of Australia for each machine and it has almost paid for it's self.(yeah) I can see the rentals have slowed on Australia. So I am pulling 1 copy from each machine and selling them $14.99 at one of my C-stores. ( I 'll let you know what happens).

We are going to have to get more creative, the rental business is changing, the studios are getting harder to work with, movies on the internet and on demand will become more and more main stream. It a good business but we all have to find our niche.

Curtis said...

I saw something like Flexplay at Staples. They statrted offering it about 9 months ago. $5 for a two day rental that you don't have to return. I noticed this week Staples still has it except now they are on "Sale" for $1. I also noticed that it looks like the same inventorry that they started with; all the movies were 9-12 months old. Looks like it's not working; at leaset not for Staples.

April 28, Hotel For Dogs - 3 copies

Anonymous said...

How many of you order more than 2, maybe 3 copies of a movie? What level of box office do you look for? I'm trying to find the balance between ordering enough stock to rotate movies out quick enough and not lose most of the buyback money, and not over ordering and killing my cash flow. Granted this probably depends on your average rentals a night, so I've got some more work to do on finding better locations.

Mike at ReadyDVD said...

Michelle and I hardly ever buy more than 2 movies of one title unless it's an absolute blockbuster. We limit our videos to under $400 per machine a month. That's basically 20 movies. It's been a happy balance for us for quite some time. We also sell the movies that come out to our locations.

Hello, I want to thank everyone for the posts for new kiosk owners. My wife and I just started in the kiosk biz. Company is movie bin, we have 2 of the 250 systems going into a c-store and a grocery store in early may. My intention is not to fill the 250 system full of movies but put in about 80 to 100 per machine. Any comments in regards to the amount of movies? Do I order all the movies from VPD? (account just set-up) or can I order some older titles from ebay? Just trying to save on the initial movie investment and initial selection of titles. Thanks in advance.
