CANADIAN SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

There are several of you from the Great White North that have started to ask questions regarding things that apply to Canada ONLY. Ex. Credit cards I haven't heard about etc..
If Mark Rudolph or the guys from DVDNow can't answer your questions, or you want to set up a place to ask each other questions, I'll post them here. If they break into different areas, I'll seperate them for you guys.

Sincerely,
Mike Weiland

I own a kiosk in canada and the Canadian UPC codes don't work in DVDnow machines so you need to look every one up in a usa code. Canadian movies UPC copes need to be programed. The dvd art work for the side is not available through canadian movie distributers. Some times it is hard to get the movies by the release date from entertainment 1. For warranty DVDnow send you the part and talk you through the install on the phone.

Very interesting questions and I think I can help you with them. First of all, In the US, at least for me, DVDNow has the parts shipped to my locations if I have a problem with the machine. I haven't had any in a long, long time though. The pretty much know what's wrong with a series of questions for my store managers. Whe I go to install the parts, they ask me if I need help. I've worked on the machines myself and find that they are really easy to work on myself. However, they are more than willing to help fix your problems over the phone.

For the DVD Art Question, use the link that I have provided for you on the left side of this blog.
GREAT PLACE TO FIND HARD TO FIND SLOT ART I have't missed any yet by going there.
I'm not sure why the Canadian Movies aren't in your machines. Have you taken this up with DVDNow yet?

Sincerely,

Hi Mike, I'm from Canada as well, I was wanting to ask you a few questions regarding advertising. Do you approach companies where you know someone that owns it or do you just pick some random business that you approach? Also, do you have business' that just place adds on the side panels of the kiosk and what do you charge. I know DVD Now suggests $90-$125 a month depending on the terms but does that sound high or is that reasonable or do you do mostly adds on your t.v. and how do you charge?
Thanks!

Great Questions and I'm sure most everyone has the same thing in back of their mind. I have this addressed on the left hand side of the blog. I don't charge as much as they suggest. I also do a few more things than add their advertising to the slots. Matter of fact, I've only got two in the slots right now. I don't want to clutter the machine up with a bunch of advertising because it's supposed to be a rental machine for movies. I have ads run after each trailer and I have advertising on my website. I also do a few more things like Search Engine Optimization word with Google Maps etc... I charge around $50 per customer a month. I have a start up fee of $250 to get the main things done. Once their done, they pretty much take care of themselves. Why so little money? Because I want my customers to know they are getting their bang for their buck. I feel that it's free money and I don't want to lose it. Yeah, I could probably charge more but if I can guarantee they won't ever get rid of my advertising because it just doesn't make sense, then I've done my job correctly.

Sincerely,

Thanks for all your info. You do the poster card, the add on the website and add on the t.v. for $50 a month? What do you mean by a start up fee of $250. Do you have to get their add card ready or do they give it to you when you put it on your kiosk? How does that work anyway to advertise on the screen. Does the company put something together for you or do you do it? Sorry for so many questions i'm just trying to understand all this we are just starting out

Yes, I do it all for them. The $250 is just a fee that I charge to get everything done for them. I figure I am going to spend some time on it and that costs money. I build a video for their business on the screen. I run it 15 seconds as a still shot with their info. on it. I'll run the video every 15 minutes. I have done some other videos too. I upload them into UMG under the channel for the kiosk. Have you used UMG?

For UPC codes in CANADA - in December and we recently had just switched over (Dec 1) to a new DVD supplier in Canada. The transition was not as smooth as I had hoped and one oversight was UPC codes. This issue was dealt with quickly and Canadian upc codes are now uploaded to the main server every month.

Hi Mike, we just completed our first full month of running the kiosk. I was just wondering what type of report you give the store owners where you have your kiosks in. Do you do a monthly report for them which shows them the rentals and sales for the month? Also, do you give them a percentage of your income after the expenses are taken off? If so, do you also include a spreadsheet for them showing them your exact costs for movies, rfid tags, merchant expenses etc. I was just wondering what the right way to go about this is, i didn't get a very clear answer from DVD Now regarding this.
Thanks!

Michelle sends out a printout of the rental history and then subtracts the losses from it. All the costs are itemized and the customer gets a final copy of their cut. We figure in the movie buy backs from the store as well. They are sent a separate copy of the movies that they have purchased throughout the month.

I work off of net profits. 10%. I have one that I don't give any profits to. Since they are closed on Sundays we've worked out a deal that so far works out.

I am interested in knowing who Canadian kiosk owners use for their Merchant Accounts and what kind of rates they get.

Thanks!

Regan,
I was hoping that our Canadian folks would answer your question. Apparently, there aren't that many Canadians on this blog. Did you ever get any results from anyone?

I have been waiting for a post. We're not getting one so far. Have you asked Mark Rudolph yet from DVDNow?

Sincerely,

Regan and Mike,
I recently bought a DVDNow kiosk and I'm scouting for locations in the Montreal, Quebec area. The info I got on the merchant services is for the Gateway - $180 set up fee, $20/month and 0.06 per transaction. And for the Process or - $50 set up fee, $12.95 /month and 2.7% for Visa and MC. In Canada we can only use credit cards, no debit cards.

Sometimes competition is good and sometimes not...being a pioneer is sometimes harder since there are no Redbox or much of any other type of DVD competition it is hard to convince stores that they need the machines

Where do I get RFID tags?

Mike at ReadyDVD said...

Both Atlas RFID and DVDNow Sell them. Call both of them for pricing on the number you want. If you look at the left side of this open blog, you'll see Shain's number for Atlas RFID. Who know's maybe he'll send them to Canada with Free Shipping.
